What is Marketing?

How do the skills required to be a successful marketer translate to skills and professions required in non business fields?

In this video, Seth Godin starts off by explaining that marketing today is the responsibility of for what you make, how you make it, how you bring it to the world, what the side effects are, who you are talking to, etc. The responsibility of how you present yourself or a product are not only an important skill in marketing, but in other professions also. For example, if you are a dentist, marketing still applies to you because it is important to gain more clients to have a more successful business. As a dentist, you want to present your accommodations in a way where it attracts more business and is beneficial to you. Godin also states that, ” a product well marketed, is a product that people want to engage in.” At the end of the day, that is the main goal for most people. He also touches on modern marketing as someone who doesn’t rely on media and attempt to interact with through it with an average product. A modern marketer looks at certain aspects of promotion that you need to consider. Many use mass media like TV to promote themselves and other use a micro media such a Facebook for promotion. To promote yourself, you need to see who your target audience is and engage with them. If you are in any field you need to look towards those who seek attention, trust and a connection. This is an extensive skill that most wish to achieve. It is helpful in the sense where you can gain connections and knowledge of others. He also talks about the Golden Circle which consists of Why, How , and What. A golden circle like this is utilized daily by professionals such as doctors when evaluating a situation. Additionally, Godin talks about is observing who we seek to serve and see what we can do to make things better for them. Customer satisfaction is a key component in marketing. Also, this is one skill that translates into almost every non-business field. For example, the field of medicine uses this skill to make new developments in medicine and learn how they can benefit life. Practice is also an important aspect of marketing because it is important to master your craft. This also goes for professions in trades, where you have to practice before you can actually produce a suitable result which is favorable. Lastly, Godin touches on how the main focus of marketing that most people forget is to be proud of what you produce. People such as architects often just make designs and end up not liking what they made. Being proud of what you produce does have effects on the results.
