Master Marketing of Bansky

  1. Usually marketers have a target market in mind before developing a marketing mix with the four P’s. Since observing Banksy’s pieces, it is clear that he wants to display a message through his work because most of it concerns social and political topics. He tends to attract quite a few people with his controversial pieces. This suggests that his target market are artists who have an interest in social and political views. Banksy started out as a typical street artist who got notoriety in Bristol, London for his art pieces that utilized stencils. He knew that more of his humorous, visually pleasing, and political pieces would get the most attraction, so that is what he was aiming for in his work. Banksy wasn’t going to set a price on any of his art. It was meant for the enjoyment of the people and for New Yorkers to go out and be more familiar with their city. On October 13, Banksy ended up selling small canvas pieces for $60 each.
  2. The art market uses the time value of money strategy not as often but for Banksy’s tour during the month of October, it was needed. The main part of Banksy that gives him the amount of followers is his surprise tactic. The popularity of his artwork only lasts for the first few months. Then, when everyone has had the chance to see the artwork, the hype around it dies down. That is why art vendors find the opportunity to get the art piece and sell it as fast as they can as long as it is relevant.

3. Banksy would usually try to find various different spots throughout New York, but each being of equal distance from the last. With that in mind, Banksy also thought about the potential free promotion to businesses in New York. Therefore, he started tagging places like restaurants and pubs where it would be easily seen by those who follow his blog. He promoted his work through his blog where he would post the new artwork he would have made daily and spread it on his social media outlets as well. Some appreciated his work and kept his murals on their properties because of the notice of crowds attracting. In the documentary, others would call in painters to paint over his artwork because they did not like the attention or vandalism. They weren’t actually appreciating the artwork and the attraction that it was bringing. Others would also take the opportunity to tag his artwork to promote their name in the art world.

4. Banksy’s customers are the companies who reach out to him and ask to work with him. His customers are also those who bring him attraction on his social medias, which lead him to get those deals with major brands. There also businesses who work in art galleries and art auctioning, and those people try to sell his paintings for a higher price range. He values his customers by giving them the oppurtunity to scope out his work and appreciate it. During the tour, he let the people of New York see his paintings for free and then proceeded to put a table and sell his artwork for $60.

5. Banksy promotes his artwork through his website. While he was doing the tour in New York, he kept track of all the art work he did for all 31 days, and would maybe put a caption to give his opinion on the piece. People would then go out and roam New York City to find the art work of the day. The objective for Banksy was to get the people of New York to explore their city more. He would also promote his artwork through the set up he had in the park, where he sold his canvas pieces. Banksy keeps in touch with his followers via Instagram and Twitter. He often promotes his art work through those social media outlets as well. He rarely sells his art work and his way of promotion is also rarely through other companies or art galleries. Social media was his main outlet for promotion.

6. Private property is at play because Banksy would take the opportunity in his residency to put his artwork up on businesses and buildings. This also became a matter of vandalism when the police got involved. With economic freedom, Banksy decided to do whatever he wanted to do during his residency, including selling his pieces in Manhattan Park and meeting with other interested art buyers for his more famous pieces. One of two of the market forces were used throughout, which are profit and supply and demand. The supply and demand of his art pieces increased and the profit for it increased as well.

Chapter 3: The Marketing Concept

The Functions of Marketing

Pricing:

The pricing function is mainly managing all the actions that settle the prices for products. With the pricing function, you need to take the competitors’ prices into consideration to guarantee the most beneficial customer service. One of the acts that are involved in the pricing function is settling on a price that will cover any expenses and still provide a helpful earnings towards the company. Another one is changing your price on a product to accommodate the circumstances. An example of the pricing function used in the real world is

Product/Service Management:

This function’s purpose is to establish new products for the company. Another purpose of product/service management is determining which products are placed in certain stores. Some things that happen in product/service management is having to reexamine previous products and determining how to improve it. For example, we witness this through multiple fast food restaurants. McDonald’s recently came out with a spicy Habanero McChicken. This act involved their product/service management area to reexamine a popular product and essentially make it greater than it already is. McDonald’s also place limited time offers on certain upgraded items, which compels customers to try it out before it is too late.

Promotion:

The promotion function is one of the most important function because it compels potential consumers to take an interest in the product. Types of non personal promotion is advertising, public relations, sales promotion, and publicity. At times, sports brands like Nike, use professional athletes as brand ambassadors. This provides publicity/public relation for their brand, which is another way of non personal communication. Nike is also very popular for their commercials that often involve an inspirational story of a professional athlete of all the obstacles they had to go through to get to where they are. Most of the time Nike does display advertisements that are influencing and bring in more customers.

Selling:

The selling function is the personal communication aspect of marketing. The selling function consists of answering questions on the phone, demonstrating how a product operates, helping customers in store. In retail stores, the selling function is the most relied on function. Many retail workers work off of commission. Sometimes that commission is an hourly rate with a percentage of the sales they make. Therefore, many retailer workers have to function well in the selling function to make any change. Another time that we usually see the selling function in action is when sales representatives call you about certain deals and promtions of their product.

Assignment #4 : Target Market and The Marketing Mix

For each of the ads determine what you think the target audience was. Do you think the commercial was effective in hitting it’s intended target audience. Why or Why not?

Commercial #1: Mike Bloomberg Campaign

The product of this commercial is basically the ideology of the campaign that Bloomberg is trying to run. He is trying to push restrictions and laws against guns. The target audience for this advertisement was definitely geared towards those who are of the legal voting age because it is a campaign advertisement for the presidential election coming this year. It is apparent that Bloomberg is a democrat considering what the video’s theme is. Bloomberg has a devoted supporter of his campaign to share her emotional story of the loss of her son, who was a victim of gun violence. She is the main factor that is promoting his campaign. It is mostly then promoted towards democrats who are against the gun lobby and want laws to be put in place.I believe that the commercial was effective in hitting intended target audience because it does cover the topic of gun violence which is a crucial topic that has taken America in a wave. He also has targeted people of color by having a person of color being the center focus of his campaign commercial as well. He included pictures of him interacting and making connections with his supporters, which is a quality many citizens look for in a president.

Commercial #2: “Stronger, Safer, More Prosperous” Donald Trump Campaign

The pricing in this commercial is displayed at the end stating that whoever the commercial is concerning, has in fact, paid for the commercial themselves. It also displays that by texting the certain code to the number, that MSG and data rates may apply. The product that is basically being shown are the effects of Donald Trump being president, which was him putting employment rates at an all time. The product is also his main title which is making America “stronger, safer, and more prosperous”. The promotion is targeted towards those who are of the legal age and Republicans. The goal is to get returning voters and possibly bring more people of color to vote for him. Finally, the placement of the campaign is that if you vote again, you will see more change. I don’t think that the commercial was too effective in hitting the the target audience because the commercial was only talking about one type of effect that has surfaced from Trump being president and there was not too much on what his campaign’s goals are.

Commercial #3: Michelob Ultra drink with Jimmy Fallon and John Cena

In this commercial, Michelob Ultra shows their 96 calorie alcoholic drink which also includes 2.6 g of carbs. This product is geared towards those who enjoy drinking but do not want the extra calories with it. Many Superbowl watchers were most likely having a beer while watching the sport. For a beer company to have a commercial during a time where most viewers are having some type of drink, is a an intelligent way to hit your target market. The company is promoting the product through two familiar TV personalities, Jimmy Fallon and John Cena. Throughout the commercial, they have the two perform in different sports with professional athletes associated with that sport. This also grabs the attention of many viewers because of the various sports. Lastly, it ends off with the drink and the important selling idea of how many calories the drink has. I believe that the commercial was effective in hitting their target audience because majority of Superbowl viewers are men who enjoy sports and beer, but are still trying to be cautious of how much they intake.

Commercial #4: Amazon’s #BeforeAlexa with Ellen DeGeneres

The product being shown in this advertisement is Amazon’s Alexa, which is a virtual home assistant, that can provide any resource or knowledge just by asking. The product is being promoted by one of the most liked TV personalities in world, Ellen DeGeneres. It shows her and her wife being late and asking Alexa to perform a certain task. And Ellen questions what people would do before they had Alexa. It then proceeds to show various points in time where people had to ask questions to others with the name similar to Alexa. Overall, the commercial is humorous and shows the convenience and simplicity of Alexa, which is the company’s main selling point. The target audience is anyone in general, but specifically those who are usually busy or dependent people. They are trying to persuade viewers to buy their product because of how useful it is. The company does a solid job of hitting their target audience with a witty and credible advertisement.

Commercial #5: Bryan Cranston with Mountain Dew

The company decides to make a parody on the movie, The Shining, with Bryan Cranston promoting their new improved drink. Their product is the new Mountain Dew with zero sugar. That is their main selling point. They even suggest that it is possibly better than the original. The main target audience is returning customers and new customers, which is basically general viewers. The commercial’s ‘plot’ seems out of place and does not have anything slightly relevant to the product. It can be seen as a bit humorous. However, the commercial is short and ends off with a typewriter repeatedly typing the same sentences again, promoting the drink. I don’t think the company quite hit the target audience with this commercial, but it could have attracted potential customers because of their promotion of the ‘zero sugar’ variable.

Assignment #3 :Chapter 1 Questions

Page 16/17

Knowledge and Understanding: #2,5,6,7

2. Marketing is the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

5. The four P’s of marketing are Product,Price, Place and Promotion. They are considered the main factors in successful marketing. Product is what you trying to sell to consumers. When companies are trying to sell a product, they want to be something that attracts consumers. Subsequently, companies are trying to innovate something unique and convenient. The product is the main focus of the four P’s, otherwise there would be no four P’s. The price is what the companies determines after the product and how much the product should be sold for. Some factors that affect the decision making of the price are a competitor’s price point, how much it took to produce the product, the cost of distribution and the advertising of the product. Place is determining where the product should be placed in the market. The availability of the product to a consumer is what is most important. The target audience is determined at this stage, which makes it easier to have the correct placement. For example, if your target audience is the youth or anyone under the age of 6, you want to place your product in as many toy stores or stores directed towards the youth, as possible.

6. Ideas are basically the issues and concepts that you come up with for marketing. This step usually occurs before the goods and services. an example of an idea well marketed by a company is Nike’s “Just Do It”. This slogan is universally used and it is almost plastered on anything associated with Nike. A service is an activity that is done for you. For example, going to a spa is a service you receive or having a product delivered is also a paid, or sometimes free service. Goods are physical items that can be delivered to someone who has purchased them. Some examples of goods are clothing, phones, and treats. Goods, services and ideas all go into products.

7. The three types of products are goods, services, and ideas. An example of an idea is the product that politicians market every term. They usually go to events, display signs and advertisements locally to persuade citizens to buy their product. And the product is voting for the candidate. This is a common type of marketing that most people forget to realize. This is one of the most persuasive products that can give you favorable results. Goods are the physical products and is what most people opt for. Most of the physical things around you are products. Anything ranging from your cellphone, backpack, water bottle, etc. Service is the action being made for you. Many telephone companies contact you to tell you about their service to compel you to join it. They are trying to sell their product to you, which is their service.

Thinking: # 1,3,5

  1. A business that sells all three types of products is Telus. They market all three types of products through sales people or advertisements. They have the idea that they are selling which is usually that they have the ‘fastest speed internet’, and this is usually displayed often in their commercials. They have their goods which can be a cable box or a Telus WiFi router, depending on what type of plan you have with the company. The service that they provide is the internet connection and speed, unlimited data, online security, etc.

3. An organization that displays organized marketing of the four P’s would be Nike. They are one of the most popular clothing brands of the decade because of the signature check logo and all the people associated with it. The idea that the organization is trying to sell is “Just Do It”, which has become a universally popular phrase. In addition, the clothing provides comfortable sportswear which accessible for most people. They also have gear for sports such as knee pads, shoes for a specific sports, equipment for the sport, etc. They usually promote the product with brand ambassadors like professional athletes and collaborating with music artists. Nike is a universally well known brand, therefore they have more than 1000 stores and about 300 of them are international. They also have an easily accessible online website where you can purchase their products. The company also often has pop-up stores in various malls with their brand ambassadors, which attract a good amount of customers.

5. Being a consumer is being apart of marketing. Everyone is a consumer, therefore everyone is apart of marketing. I will be a consumer for the rest of my life because I am constantly buying products whether it is a need or want. Learning about marketing strategies and planning now will help me become a more conscious consumer. Another way marketing can affect my future is when it comes to having a job interview. I have to use some aspect of marketing skills because the goal for me is to promote myself in that interview so I can get offered a position. Lastly, when it comes to having a job in whatever career field I pursue, I will also need to have a plan to make everything go smoothly. I can refer back to certain marketing plans and take some inspiration from them.

I have browsed through your website and I have seen all the resources and opportunities that you provide for student membership. This could be greatly favorable for me considering it can teach me skills that can be required to be a better marketer. For instance, your webinars that are live streamed thorough you website which has business professional in the field of marketing that teach their strategies and expertise on certain aspects of marketing. You also provide online courses specific to many parts of marketing. For example, you have enrollment commenced for the “Integrated Branding” course, where it shows you how to ‘hone your brand strategy to enhance your organization’s value with tactical guidelines and principles.” Lastly, you give the opportunity to share and learn about ideas through the Marketing Hub where you can access different outlets of marketing. I believe that I would be a good fit for a membership position for your website.

What is Marketing?

How do the skills required to be a successful marketer translate to skills and professions required in non business fields?

In this video, Seth Godin starts off by explaining that marketing today is the responsibility of for what you make, how you make it, how you bring it to the world, what the side effects are, who you are talking to, etc. The responsibility of how you present yourself or a product are not only an important skill in marketing, but in other professions also. For example, if you are a dentist, marketing still applies to you because it is important to gain more clients to have a more successful business. As a dentist, you want to present your accommodations in a way where it attracts more business and is beneficial to you. Godin also states that, ” a product well marketed, is a product that people want to engage in.” At the end of the day, that is the main goal for most people. He also touches on modern marketing as someone who doesn’t rely on media and attempt to interact with through it with an average product. A modern marketer looks at certain aspects of promotion that you need to consider. Many use mass media like TV to promote themselves and other use a micro media such a Facebook for promotion. To promote yourself, you need to see who your target audience is and engage with them. If you are in any field you need to look towards those who seek attention, trust and a connection. This is an extensive skill that most wish to achieve. It is helpful in the sense where you can gain connections and knowledge of others. He also talks about the Golden Circle which consists of Why, How , and What. A golden circle like this is utilized daily by professionals such as doctors when evaluating a situation. Additionally, Godin talks about is observing who we seek to serve and see what we can do to make things better for them. Customer satisfaction is a key component in marketing. Also, this is one skill that translates into almost every non-business field. For example, the field of medicine uses this skill to make new developments in medicine and learn how they can benefit life. Practice is also an important aspect of marketing because it is important to master your craft. This also goes for professions in trades, where you have to practice before you can actually produce a suitable result which is favorable. Lastly, Godin touches on how the main focus of marketing that most people forget is to be proud of what you produce. People such as architects often just make designs and end up not liking what they made. Being proud of what you produce does have effects on the results.

My First Blog Post

A memorable/persuasive commercial

When I think about a memorable commercial, I immediately think of this Budweiser commercial that played during the Super Bowl a few years ago. The commercial aims to tell a touching story, while subtlety putting the logo of the brand. The commercial starts off displaying the growth of an owner and its dog’s relationship. It builds up to the final scene that shows the owner leaving behind its dog at home, to go out with his friends. After what seems like several hours, the scene implies that the owner has irresponsibly driven under the influence and may have gotten into an accident. A blank screen with the text, “For some the waiting never ends, but we can change that”. The goal was to have a message at the end that stands out, which the commercial manages to do. However, it finally shows the owner arriving home with the dog ecstatic for his arrival. The man says, “Hey, I’m sorry. I decided I shouldn’t drive home last night and stayed at Dave’s”. To sum up, the main idea is to avoid drinking and driving because you have others relying on you to make it home safely. The main factor of this being a memorable commercial is its cuteness factor. The cuteness factor is obviously the white puppy, because almost everyone likes puppies. The most memorable moment is the puppy being upset that the owner will not be coming back, which makes the commercial emotionally touching. Lastly, at the very end, Budweiser displays its logo. Therefore, whenever someone recalls this advertisement, the last thing they will remember is the Budweiser logo, which will make the viewer more inclined to purchase the product. Overall, the commercial is relevant and is something that you can share with others and hits all the characteristics needed for a persuasive commercial.
